Cold Water Therapy.
At the wellness hotel directly by the lake in Carinthia, temperatures of around 2 degrees Celsius in Lake Turrach provide for a memorable experience.
After the sauna, okay. But stepping into cold water without warming up? Just the thought sends shivers down some people's spines. Others, however, eagerly plunge into the cool water and rave about the feelings of happiness that cold water therapy induces. Regular exposure to the cold water has many positive effects. Feel like trying it out? Here's a little guide.
Anyone wanting to try cold or ice bathing should consult their doctor. For people with high blood pressure or cardiovascular issues, this adventure is not recommended. Assuming there are no medical reasons against it, there are different ways to become familiar with cold water.
Some people prepare with cold showers. Others consult books or videos. Instructions can be found, for example, in the guide "The Healing Power of Cold" by Josephine Worseck. In September 2023, Wim Hof trainers held a cold bathing workshop at Hotel Hochschober for the first time. Wim Hof, also known as "The Iceman," is a Dutch pioneer of ice bathing. His method is based on a special breathing technique. He and certified trainers reveal how it works and what beginners should consider in workshops and video courses.
Brave souls dive right in. Lake Turrach is perfect for beginners. Starting from a maximum of 20 degrees Celsius in midsummer, the water gradually cools down. At the sauna jetty, there's an entrance point with stairs and the option to hold onto something.
Even in winter, when Lake Turrach is mostly frozen and the water temperature is in the single digits, a small area around the lake bath and the sauna jetty remains free.
Used correctly, cold can be a source of strength, bringing many health benefits. Cold water, as Sebastian Kneipp already knew, alleviates many ailments. In modern medicine, cryotherapy plays an important role, especially in inflammations and rheumatism. Cold water therapy and winter bathing stimulate metabolism, promote fitness, boost the immune system, and immediately noticeable—they evoke feelings of happiness.
